About Dominic Clemence
I studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, University of London and later worked as an audio-visual producer and animator which introduced me to film. I completed a further degree in Film and Television at London College of Communication (then LCP) and later an MA at the Royal College of Art.
I had a long career in film and television as a director and Director of Photography shooting and directing single films and dramas including many popular series such as Silent Witness, Death in Paradise, Kingdom, Wire in the Blood, Heartbeat, The Bill and many, many more besides. (visit: Dominic Clemence IMDB for credits, or www.dominicclemence.tv to see some films).
I have been prolific photographer for theatre as well as editorial and advertising, specialising in portraiture and interiors.
Beyond Photography is something that I created way back when I was at Goldsmiths, but at that point the process was incredibly different. It was way before computers were available to anyone, let alone artists, however the theory was born back then. It went something like this….

Beyond photography embodies these two things, the innate existence and the pure expression, to create portraits that are at once, undeniable renditions of a character while also possessing a depth and exposure of a something that can only be told with painting and drawing; the freehand.
Photography relies on the innate existence of objects. A photograph is taken, and it records the light, shade and colour as it reflects off the object. If the object doesn’t exist, it cannot be seen. This is not so with painting which relies on nothing other than feeling and imagination. Even if we attempt to paint an object that sits in-front of us, it is not that thing and never can be. It is an interpretation fed through the eyes, filtered, and rearticulated through our soul, arms, fingers and brush. In the process things happen that we cannot expect. This is the story of our relationship with the object, and its beautiful.
